Young moms

I have recently picked up something quite disturbing while reading some young moms posts and comments on fb. I am an older mom, with a grandchild, so I have some child rearing experience, which might qualify me to voice this concern.

Many young and/or new moms don't hesitate to grab the medicine bottle, sometimes for the flimsiest of ailments. Worst of all, even to calm little ones down. The drugs contained in these medicines are HARMFUL to little bodies, even in small doses and in spite of what doctors and pharmicists tell us, they affect them adversely.

The child might be calm for a while, but build-up inevitably occurs and make them feel crabby and more miserable than before. Which is when the mom reaches for the medicine again and so a vicious cycle starts. Some moms even dose their babies when they wake up at night!

Rearing young ones is a stressful, strenous, tiring and thankless task. The rewards are brilliant, though! When a little one puts his or her arms around you and says: "love you, mommy", every hardship is worth it. I just wish more people took the time to think parenthood through, before they have children and realise just how much time and effort it takes. Once you've made the decision and your child arrives, dedicate yourself to the task of raising that child with all you've got. It is not the nanny, creche, school or grandparent's task to raise that child. Put your life on hold and embrace this new chapter in your life with abandon, including the hard times, of which there will be plenty.

All too soon they're off to school, college, univercity, a job. Enjoy your children, each one is a special gift.
